The quickest way from Stansted to London is usually the Stansted Express, which reaches Liverpool Street in about 48 to 50 minutes. Coaches are the budget choice and run around the clock, but take longer and depend on traffic. A pre-booked private hire car takes roughly 75 to 90 minutes to central London outside peak hours, and is the only option that goes door to door.
Stansted is the furthest of London’s main airports from the centre, so the choice matters more here than at Heathrow or City. This guide compares the three options on journey time, where you end up, how they cope with luggage, and what happens if your flight lands very early or very late. Fares and timetables are as of October 2026 and can change, so check the official sources linked below before you travel.
Stansted to London at a glance
| Option | Typical time to central London | Arrives at | Runs overnight? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stansted Express | About 48–50 min to Liverpool Street | Liverpool Street, Tottenham Hale | No (roughly 05:30 to 00:30 from the airport) | Travelling light to the City or east London |
| Coach (National Express, Flibco) | Varies with traffic | Victoria, Liverpool Street, Stratford, Baker Street and more | Yes | Lowest cost, flexible arrival points |
| Pre-booked private hire car | About 75–90 min outside peak hours | Your door | Yes, if the operator covers it | Luggage, groups, families, very early or late flights |
Times for the train and coach don’t include getting to your final address from the station or stop.
Stansted Express: fast, but you finish at Liverpool Street
The Stansted Express runs from the station directly beneath the terminal, a couple of minutes’ walk from arrivals. According to the airport, as of October 2026:
- Journey time: about 48 minutes to Liverpool Street and about 36 minutes to Tottenham Hale.
- Frequency: every 15 minutes through most of the day, seven days a week, with gaps of up to 30 minutes at some times.
- Hours: the first train from the airport leaves around 05:30 (05:55 Tuesday to Thursday) and the last at about 00:30.
- Fares: advance singles from £9.90. On-the-day fares are usually higher.
- Payment: contactless works; Oyster does not.
Tottenham Hale connects to the Victoria line, which is the quicker route to the West End or Victoria. The airport puts the trip to Victoria at about 1 hour 15 minutes with that change. For the City, Shoreditch or anywhere near the Elizabeth line, Liverpool Street is well placed.
The trade-off is the final leg. If you’re staying in Kensington, Mayfair or Westminster, you’ll still need the Tube or a cab from Liverpool Street, which means handling your bags again after an already long trip.
Coaches: cheapest, slowest, and they run all night
The bus and coach station is opposite the main terminal entrance, about two minutes’ walk away. As of October 2026 the airport lists:
- National Express A6: Tottenham Hale, Golders Green, Finchley Road, St John’s Wood, Baker Street, Paddington and Victoria.
- National Express A8: Tottenham Hale, Stamford Hill, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street, Southwark, Waterloo and Victoria.
- National Express A9: Stratford, Canary Wharf, Bow, Mile End, Whitechapel, Liverpool Street and Bethnal Green.
- Flibco: every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, to Liverpool Street, Stratford and Finsbury Park, some services via other stops.
The airport says coaches run 24 hours a day, with more than 200 daily services into London. It doesn’t publish journey times on that page, and warns that trips can take much longer at peak times. Fares vary by operator and how early you book, so check National Express or Flibco for the current price.
The coach is a good fit if one of its stops is near where you’re going and you’re not in a hurry. Large cases go in the hold, which is easier than wrestling them onto a busy train.
Pre-booked car: door to door, with the price agreed first
A private hire car takes the M11 into London. Outside peak hours, expect about 75 to 90 minutes to central London. In the evening rush or on a Friday afternoon it can be noticeably longer. That’s slower than the train to Liverpool Street, but if your destination is in the West End or south-west London, the door-to-door time can end up similar once you count the change and the final leg.
How a pre-booked pickup usually works at Stansted:
- Share your flight number when you request the quote, so the operator can watch for delays.
- Meet in arrivals. Operators usually meet passengers in the arrivals hall. Your operator confirms the exact meeting point.
- Walk to the car. Drivers who wait for you generally park in one of the airport’s short-stay car parks, which carry pick-up charges (as of October 2026, £13 for up to 30 minutes and £21 for up to an hour). Some operators include this in their quote and some add it, so ask.
Tip: check what the quote includes. Before you confirm, ask the operator whether parking, waiting time after landing, and the Congestion Charge (if your destination is inside the zone) are included.
Every private hire operator, driver and vehicle in London must be licensed by TfL. Our guide to checking a TfL private hire licence shows how to confirm it yourself.
On MinicabTransfer, fares from Stansted to central London start from £119 for a saloon, or from £169 for an MPV. MinicabTransfer compares operators and forwards your quote request; the TfL-licensed operator you choose confirms the final price and terms directly with you. See Stansted fares to compare. Late arrivals and early departures
If your flight leaves at dawn or lands near midnight, this is where the options separate.
Landing late. The last Stansted Express from the airport leaves around 00:30. If your flight is delayed past that, the train is gone. The coaches keep running, but at night you may wait for a departure and then still need to get from the drop-off stop to your door.
Flying early. The first Stansted Express from Liverpool Street leaves between about 03:40 and 04:40 depending on the day. For a 06:00 departure, that can be cutting it fine once you allow for getting to Liverpool Street first. A pre-booked car can collect you from home at whatever time the operator agrees.
Delays. With a pre-booked car, giving your flight number lets the operator adjust the pickup time. Free waiting time after landing varies by operator, so check it when they contact you.
For timing your trip the other way, our guide on how early to leave central London for Gatwick explains how to work back from your flight time. The same approach applies to Stansted, with a longer drive.
Which should you choose?
- Travelling light to the City, Shoreditch or Stratford? Take the Stansted Express. It’s the quickest and most predictable.
- On a tight budget and not in a hurry? Take a coach to the stop nearest your destination.
- Heading to the West End or south-west London with luggage? Compare the train-plus-Tube against a car. The car avoids the change and the stairs.
- Two or more people, children, or lots of bags? Work out the cost per person. One car fare can come close to several train tickets plus a taxi from Liverpool Street.
- Landing after midnight or leaving before dawn? A pre-booked car or the overnight coach are the realistic options.
If a car suits your trip, compare fares and request a quote from TfL-licensed operators. Our airport transfers page covers every London airport, and you can see the vehicle types on offer on the fleet page.
