To get from London to Dover cruise terminal, the quickest public transport option is Southeastern’s high-speed train from St Pancras International to Dover Priory, then a taxi or shuttle to the port. A pre-booked car takes you door to door with your luggage and no changes. The National Express coach from Victoria is cheaper, but takes considerably longer and stops in the town centre, not at the port.
This guide covers Dover’s two cruise terminals, each way of getting there from London, how to time your journey on embarkation day, and what to do about luggage.
Dover’s cruise terminals
The Port of Dover has two dedicated cruise terminals, Cruise Terminal 1 and Cruise Terminal 2, plus an additional port-of-call berth. Both terminals are in the Western Docks, at the same address:
Dover Cruise Terminals, Western Docks, Dover, Kent CT17 9DQ
The port advises checking its cruise schedule to see where your ship will berth. Your cruise line also confirms your terminal in your booking documents. Both terminals have a taxi rank outside, which helps on the way home.
Note that the cruise terminals are separate from the busy ferry terminal in the Eastern Docks. Give your driver the cruise terminal name and the CT17 9DQ postcode, not just “Dover port”.
Option 1: high-speed train and taxi
Southeastern runs high-speed trains from London St Pancras International to Dover Priory. As of October 2026, Southeastern’s Dover page gives a journey time of around 1 hour 15 minutes. The Port of Dover quotes 66 minutes for the fastest services. Slower mainline trains also run from London Charing Cross and London Victoria. Check National Rail for your date.
From Dover Priory, the Port of Dover says:
- Walking to the cruise terminals takes 30 to 40 minutes, which isn’t practical with cruise luggage.
- Taxis wait at a rank outside the station.
- A station shuttle runs on selected dates. On turnaround days, a limited shuttle runs between the cruise terminal and the station only.
Good for: travellers near St Pancras with manageable luggage. Watch out for: getting your cases to St Pancras across London, weekend engineering works, and taxi queues at Dover Priory when a large ship is turning around.
Option 2: coach
National Express route 007 runs from London Victoria Coach Station to Dover town centre, calling at several stops including Canterbury and Folkestone. Using the timetable valid from 6 October 2026, journeys take roughly three to four hours, depending on the departure.
The coach ends in the town centre, so you still need a taxi to the Western Docks. National Express luggage allowances are also smaller than most cruise packing. Check its luggage policy before you book.
Good for: budget travel when you are packing light. Watch out for: the long journey time, the extra leg to the port, and luggage limits.
Option 3: door-to-door car
A pre-booked private hire car collects you at home or your hotel and drops you at the cruise terminal. The drive from central London is roughly 75 to 80 miles, via the M2 and A2 or the M20 and A20. Allow at least two hours, and more in the weekday peaks or if there are delays near the port.
A car makes sense when:
- You have a lot of luggage. Cruise cases, garment bags and mobility aids go in the boot once and come out at the terminal. For families or groups, an MPV gives room for everyone. See the vehicle types partner operators offer on our fleet page.
- You are travelling as a group, where one vehicle can cost less per person than several rail tickets plus taxis.
- You want to avoid changes, especially with children or anyone who finds stations difficult.
- You are flying in first. A car can take you from Heathrow or Gatwick to Dover in one journey. Our airport transfers page covers every London airport.
We don’t publish a standard price for Dover because it depends on your pickup point and vehicle. Compare fares from TfL-licensed operators and request a quote from the one you prefer. The operator confirms the final price directly with you, including waiting time if your return ship is delayed.
Traffic near the port. Roads around Dover can slow down at busy ferry times, particularly in school holidays. Check for traffic notices the day before and build in extra time.
Timing on embarkation day
Your cruise line will give you a check-in or arrival time. Plan your journey to arrive within it, not hours early, and not at the last minute.
- Confirm your terminal and check-in time from your cruise documents and the port’s cruise schedule.
- Choose your journey time. By car, allow at least two hours from central London. By train, add the time to reach St Pancras and the taxi from Dover Priory.
- Add a margin of at least an hour for traffic, rail disruption or delays near the port.
- Check for disruption the day before: engineering works, motorway closures and port notices.
If your check-in time is early in the morning, staying in Dover or nearby the night before takes the pressure off.

Luggage and the return journey
- Tag your cases with your cruise line’s luggage labels before you leave home.
- Keep essentials in a day bag: passports, cruise documents, medication and chargers.
- List every bag when you request a quote, so the operator offers a vehicle with enough space.
- Arrange the return in advance. Disembarkation mornings are busy. Agree a pickup time and meeting point with the operator, and keep their number to hand in case the ship docks late.
