To get from London to Southampton cruise terminal, you can take a direct train from London Waterloo to Southampton Central and a short taxi to the port, a National Express coach from Victoria, or a pre-booked car from your door to the terminal. The train is usually quickest. The car is easiest when you have several cruise-sized cases, and the coach is the cheapest but slowest.

This guide is for anyone starting a cruise at Southampton from London. It covers the five terminals and which dock gate each one uses, the three main ways to get there, and how to time your journey on embarkation day.

The five Southampton cruise terminals

Associated British Ports (ABP), which runs the Port of Southampton, lists five cruise terminals in two separate docks. Knowing which one your ship uses matters, because the entrances are different.

Ocean Cruise TerminalEastern DocksDock Gate 4
City Cruise TerminalWestern DocksDock Gate 10
Horizon Cruise TerminalWestern DocksDock Gate 10
Mayflower Cruise TerminalWestern DocksDock Gate 20 if driving; Gate 10 on foot

Your cruise line confirms the terminal in your booking documents. Lines sometimes use different terminals for different sailings, so don’t assume it’s the same as last time.

Option 1: train and taxi

Direct South Western Railway trains run from London Waterloo to Southampton Central. As of October 2026, South Western Railway’s Southampton page puts the journey at around an hour and a half on average, and it can take longer at weekends or during engineering works. Check the live timetable for your date.

From Southampton Central, ABP says:

  • City and Horizon are about a 15-minute walk.
  • Mayflower and Ocean are about a 30-minute walk.
  • QEII is best reached by taxi.

With cruise luggage, most people take a taxi from the station rank for the last leg, even to the nearer terminals.

Good for: couples or solo travellers with light-to-moderate luggage who live near a London terminus. Watch out for: getting large cases across London to Waterloo, possible weekend engineering works, and queues for taxis at the station when several ships sail on the same day.

Option 2: coach

National Express runs coaches from London Victoria Coach Station to Southampton. As of October 2026, its London to Southampton page lists a fastest journey of about 2 hours 30 minutes and up to 14 departures a day. The coach goes to Southampton Coach Station, not the port, so you still need a taxi to your terminal.

Good for: keeping costs down if you are travelling light and live near Victoria. Watch out for: National Express luggage limits, which are tighter than most cruise packing allows. Check its luggage policy before you book. You also need a second leg from the coach station to the port.

Option 3: door-to-door car

A pre-booked private hire car collects you at home or your hotel and drops you at the terminal. The bag drop area is outside the terminal building, so your cases go straight from the car boot to the porters. The drive from central London is about 80 miles, mostly on the M3. It can take two hours or more, depending on traffic and where in London you start.

This option suits:

  • Families and groups, where one vehicle can cost less per person than several train tickets plus taxis.
  • Heavy packers. Formal-night outfits for a two-week cruise rarely fit a coach allowance. An MPV gives a group room for everyone’s cases. See the vehicle types partner operators offer on our fleet page.
  • Anyone with limited mobility, since there are no stations, stairs or changes.
  • Passengers flying in. If you land at Heathrow or Gatwick on the day you sail, a car can take you directly to the port. Our airport transfers page covers every London airport.

We don’t publish a standard price for Southampton because fares depend on your exact pickup point and vehicle. Compare fares from TfL-licensed operators for your address and request a quote from the one you prefer. The operator confirms the final price directly with you, including any waiting time.

When to leave London on embarkation day

Most cruise lines give each passenger an arrival or check-in time. Arriving much earlier usually just means waiting outside the terminal, and arriving late can mean being refused boarding. Work backwards from that time.

  1. Find your check-in time and terminal in your cruise documents.
  2. Add the journey. Allow a generous two to two and a half hours for a car from central London, or the train time plus waiting time and a taxi.
  3. Add a margin of at least an hour. The M3 and M27 can be slow, especially on Friday afternoons, at the start of school holidays and on busy turnaround days when several ships sail at once.
  4. Check for disruption the day before: rail engineering works, motorway closures and port notices.

Consider staying the night before. If your check-in time is early morning, or you are travelling from outside London, a night in Southampton removes most of the risk. A ship will not normally wait for passengers who miss check-in.

Luggage tips for cruise transfers

  • Label every case with the luggage tags your cruise line sends. Porters take bags at the bag drop and deliver them to your cabin later.
  • Keep a day bag with you with travel documents, medication, chargers and anything you need before your cases arrive in your cabin.
  • Tell the operator how many cases you have when you request a quote, including garment bags and mobility aids. A saloon that suits a weekend away may not take a fortnight’s cruise luggage for two.
  • Book the return leg too. Disembarkation mornings are busy. Agree the pickup time and meeting point with the operator in advance, and keep their contact number handy.
